Question by Stochastic: How do I run a script in linux shell without it interfering with my terminal?
I log in to a server using ssh. I want to run a script that runs for a very long time. When I run the script, the terminal stops working until the script has finished running. I want the script to run in the background, and let me have my terminal again so that I don’t have to wait for the script to finish before doing other commands.

What you can do is run the script in the back ground. eg

perl scriptname.pl &

The & means that the perl script will run in the back ground.

If you want the script to run in the background when you log out you need to add a command called nohup eg

nohup perl scriptname.pl &

The output of our script will be sent to a file called nohup.out

If you want write the output to a specfic file you can do the following eg

nohup perl scriptname.pl > outputfile.txt &

This will pipe the screen output of your script to the file output.txt

This should work on most versions of linux.

I’m not entirely clear on what you’re referring to… if you’re wanting to get a copy of the text from a Pokemon game, try looking on GameFAQs (http://www.gamefaqs.com/). There are scripts for a few of the games on there. (There’s one for Blue but none for Platinum or Ruby, those are the only games I glanced at.) If the particular game you’re wanting to obtain a script for doesn’t have one on GameFAQs, you’d have to rip it yourself. You can find information on RHDN (http://www.romhacking.net/) on how to do that.

If you’re wanting to change how the game works, that’s a lot more complicated. Unlike some PC games, there isn’t just a “script” that you have to edit, it requires a whole lot of programming work. Some Pokemon games have level editors and such but it still requires considerable work to make major changes.

PokeCommunity (http://www.pokecommunity.com/) is a site dedicated to Pokemon, including a large number of Pokemon hackers. You can probably find people there that can help you with either thing.
